What you need to know about removing asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre mined from rocks, which was extensively used in construction industry due to its resistance to heat, electricity and sound. However, it has now been known for many years to be extremely harmful (carcinogenic) through inhalation of the fibres. A Key factor in the risk of developing an asbestos related disease is the total number of fibres which are breathed in.
Asbestos related diseases are currently responsible for approximately 4,000 deaths per year in Britain alone.
Asbestos is still present in a wide variety of buildings, including homes, public and commercial buildings. Provided the asbestos is not damaged or disturbed so that it is not releasing fibres, it does not present any hazard to health. It is the inhalation of its microscopic fibres which can cause major health problems in cases of high or sustained exposure.
